Based on analyses of satellite imagery, the Darwin VAAC reported that on 18 May an ash plume from Dukono rose to an altitude of 3 km (10,000 ft) and drifted 55 km E.

Dukono is a volcano located at the northernmost corner of Halmahera island. It has a broad profile and is capped by compound craters. Dukono is an active volcano.
